Are You Flossing as You Should?

When your life is busy, flossing often falls to the bottom of your to-do list. Unfortunately, failing to floss regularly can increase your risk of flossingdeveloping tooth decay or gum disease. Milford, MA, dentists, Dr. Peyman Beigi and Dr. Nina Raeisian, discuss why flossing is so important and explain proper flossing techniques.

Flossing is an important part of your oral hygiene routine

Flossing offers a simple way to prevent cavities. Although brushing your teeth removes plaque from the visible surfaces of your teeth, your toothbrush can't tackle the plaque that forms between teeth. Flossing is the only way to get rid of plaque in those tight spaces. Failure to floss means that plaque may turn into a very hard deposit called tartar. When tartar forms at your gum line, it can cause gum disease. You'll prevent plaque and tartar buildup if you floss every day.

String or tape?

The type of floss you use doesn't matter. As long as the material can fit between your teeth easily, it will remove plaque from your teeth. You'll find a large selection of floss in Milford drugstores, including string, tape and flossing picks. Picks can come in handy if you find it hard to reach your back molars.

How should I floss?

Pull out at least 18 inches of floss from the dispenser and wrap two or three inches around the middle fingers of each hand. Gently push the floss between two teeth and move it up and down. Wrap the floss around the base of teeth in a "C" shape to remove plaque on your gum line. Remove the floss from between the teeth, place a fresh section between your middle fingers and move on to the next two teeth.

If you haven't flossed regularly in the past, your gums may bleed slightly when you first begin flossing. If your gums continue to bleed, see your dentist. Bleeding gums can be an early sign of gum disease.
